Lambing at Wye Organic

The fields are greening, the daffodils are nodding in the breeze, and the rhythmic sound of bleating has returned to our corner of the Wye Valley. Lambing season is well underway at Wye Organic, and there is a particular buzz in the air this year as we see the results of some very intentional breeding choices.

It is a wonderful time of year to witness the resilience and beauty of nature.

As a Certified Organic and Pasture for Life farm, we believe in keeping our animals in their most natural environment. Watching a newborn lamb find its legs in the open pasture for the first time remains one of the most rewarding sights of the farming calendar.

A New Chapter for the Flock: The Suffolk Influence

This season marks an exciting shift for our gene pool. While our resident 'Easycare' ewes are the backbone of the farm - famed for their hardiness and ability to naturally shed their own wool - we decided to introduce a new breed of ram to the mix: the Suffolk.

By crossing our low-maintenance Easycare girls with these robust Suffolk rams, we are aiming for the "best of both worlds." The goal is to produce lambs that inherit that famous Suffolk growth rate and superior muscle conformation, while retaining the maternal instincts and thriftiness of our resident flock. Seeing the first of these cross-bred lambs find their legs has been a highlight; they are sturdy, energetic, and already showing that distinctive character we were hoping for.

Beyond the Lambing Field

As many of you know, our commitment to regenerative farming practices means we focus not just on the lambs themselves, but on the overall health of our land. This spring, we’ve been focused on rotational grazing, moving our mothers and their young to fresh, diverse pastures frequently.

This mimics natural herd movements, ensuring the animals always have access to the best "salad bar" of herb-rich leys, while allowing the soil and grass to rest and recover. It’s an essential part of creating a truly sustainable and thriving ecosystem that supports both our livestock and the local wildlife.

From Our Farm to Your Table

We believe that knowing the story behind your food is just as important as the flavour. Whether it’s choosing the right ram to improve the flock or moving the hurdles to fresh pasture, every decision we make is rooted in transparency and welfare.

Stay tuned for more updates as the season progresses. Thank you for being a part of our community and supporting local, organic agriculture!
