At Wye Organic, we often say that we don’t just farm food; we farm soil. While the vibrant petals of our bouquets and the rich marbling of our Pasture for Life beef are what you see, the real magic happens beneath your wellies.
In an organic system, soil isn’t just ‘dirt’ - it’s a complex, breathing ecosystem. For us, maintaining our Soil Association organic certification isn’t about ticking boxes; it’s about honouring the subterranean world that makes everything else possible.

Healthy soil is the ultimate multi-tasker. According to the Soil Association, organic farms typically have 20% more organic matter in their soil. This isn't just a statistic; it’s the fuel that drives our entire farm:
Our cattle and sheep are Pasture for Life certified, which means they eat a 100% forage-based diet. This relationship is a perfect circle:
As they roam, their hooves press organic matter into the earth, while their manure provides a natural, nutrient-dense boost for the earthworms.

We rotate our herds to prevent "poaching" (soil compaction). This keeps the soil structure open, allowing it to act like a giant sponge. In fact, healthy soil can store 1.5 Olympic swimming pools' worth of water per hectare, protecting our local Wye landscape from both floods and droughts.
It isn’t just our managed livestock that benefit. Our wild boar and venison roam the estate, acting as nature’s own "rotovators." The boar, in particular, disturb the topsoil with their snouts, encouraging a greater variety of wild seeds to germinate. This helps us support the 25% more species typically found on organic farms, from bees to beetles.
When you choose a Wye Organic veg box or a cut of our grass-fed meat, you are supporting a cycle of renewal. You are choosing food grown in soil that is getting richer every year.
Healthy soil leads to healthy plants, healthy animals, and a healthier planet. Next time you visit us, take a moment to think of the millions of microbes working away beneath your feet—they are the unsung heroes of the British countryside.
Did you know? One gram of healthy soil can harbour up to 10 billion organisms. That’s more than the number of people on Earth!
